Following the Inca Trail in Ecuador

The Inca incorporated what is toInca Trail 2day Ecuador in the 15th century.  The Incas were the last of several Indigenous peoples that occupied and settled what is today Ecuador.  This travel course will survey and follow the Inca trail throughout the Ecuadorean Andes.  By travelling through and exploring the Ecuadorean Andes, we will learn the story of the Inca’s conquest, incorporation and the impact that Spanish conquest and colonization had in this part of the Inca Empire.

Inca Trail 3We will learn about the unique Inca architectural style and Inca urban planning as well as the relationship between the diverse ecological niches found in mountain geography and Inca settlement patterns. We will visit pre-Inca and Inca ruins as well as sacred sites still maintained by contemporary indigenous communities in 6 Andean provinces of Ecuador.

PROGRAM DATES:  May 30 - June 15, 2017

Ecuador

Inca Trail 1 Geographer Teodoro Wolf once called Ecuador a "geographer's paradise" because of the rich diversity in biomes and ecological niches that make Ecuador a laboratory for biology and physical geographers.  Within hours, one can find themselves in tundra conditions that define the land of eternal snows and the next, in the land of tropical birds and flowers.  Ecuador is a laboratory for human geographers as well.

Inca Trail 4Ecuador, straddling the equator in northwestern South America, is a pluri-cultural and pluri-lingual society.  Ecuador has a significant Indigenous communities and important African and Asian communities within a European/Criollo society.
