Program Description:

The City

bilbao3Located in Northern Spain, Bilbao is the largest business and cultural city in Northern Spain. Bilbao is surrounded by beautiful green mountains, rural valleys, natural parks and coastal beaches providing nature-lovers, hikers and surfers an ideal natural environment to enjoy.  

You will also be immersed in the unique Basque culture and language of the area.

The city itself is considered an architectural reference around the world. The Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry is part of the city's bustling cultural life. While in Bilbao you will be able to attend music concerts, art exhibits, theater plays and film festivals organized by the city. 

El PuppyIn addition, Bilbao offers a unique mixture of Spanish tradition and modern ways. The Old Quarter and the city's downtown are home to cultural treasures, old churches and buildings, but also shops and countless restaurants that will enable you to try regional and international cuisine.

Bilbao is directly connected with major cities in Spain (ie: Madrid, Barcelona, Zaragoza). Frequent and low-cost international flights connect Bilbao with major European cities such as London, Paris, Frankfurt or Milan.

Program Design

UW-Green Bay students will be taking classes at the prestigious Universidad de Deusto, a private
Spanish university well-known in Europe for its academic leadership and international projection.
Students can choose from three different courses that focus on International Business or Global Studies as well as Spanish language courses.  Students will choose two courses to take while in Bilbao for a total of 6 UWGB credits.  Students are also able to visit local companies such as a local winery or the Bilbao Stock Market.  Find more information about courses and company visits on this website.
Other guided excursions included in the program are a three day tour of Madrid or Segovia, Pampalona, city tour of Bilbao, Biscay Bay, and San Sebastian.  Most costs are included in the program fee. 

INTERNSHIP: There is an 8 week summer internship opportunity in business available (May 19th- July 13th) for students with upper level Spanish language skills.  Contact the OIE for more information.

Students choose a Spanish Language course and another elective course for a total of 7 UWGB credits (6 if two electives are taken).  The electives focus on literature, grammar, and culture in Spain.  Find the course options and syllabi on this website.

Alicante M13 5Students have a choice of staying with a host family (required for Language & Culture students) or a coed residence hall close to the university during their stay.
